Everyone loves a promotion, right? A little extra compensation for all that hard work. Well, training and promotions aren't just key to the modern capitalist landscape of 2024; they're also crucial to the battlefields of Unicorn Overlord.

The latest in Atlus and Vanillaware's series of videos detailing Unicorn Overlord's many systems dives into training. Specifically, we get some idea of what it means to level up a unit, promote them, and how to keep everyone up-to-snuff for the coming engagements.

As Josef explains to the young prince Alain, different units have different strengths. Putting individual fighters into different squads can help bolster their forces, reinforce their weaknesses, or emphasize their strengths. Healers, fliers, archers, mages, and more can all move the needle on the battlefield.

Shape up or ship out

To keep all of your army at peak condition, you'll need to train and promote, to expand each individual unit's capabilities. A great example is Alain himself, who gains a horse with his class promotion.

It looks like this won't only affect Alain's battle stats, but offer him a faster means of traversal on the overworld, thanks to his steed. Spending honor, earned through completing quests, makes these crucial promotions happen.

But alongside new work opportunities, units will also need some work experience. You know, XP. Sigils of the Ancients, a.k.a. Auxiliary Stages, offer a chance to do some battle against phantom soldiers in the magical training realm, like Vanillaware's own take on the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Send some units here, and not only can they get some XP for themselves, they can also find Military Treatises. These let you distribute experience to units without putting them in battle, a nice option for those with cataclysmically low numbers. I'm not sure if there's perma-death or not, but either way, it's a welcome way to level up an army.

We're gradually gaining an understanding of what the moment-to-moment of Unicorn Overlord looks like, and it won't be much longer until we get to experience it for ourselves either. Vanillaware's tactics RPG launches on March 8, 2024 for PC, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation.
